This funding from the National Lottery, through Creative Scotland, applied for at a time of crucial importance and uncertainty for the arts in Scotland, secures the immediate future of this new magazine. The award will support Extra Teeth through a pilot expansion year, which spans the publication of two new issues in 2021 (Issue Three in February and Issue Four in August), including payment for authors, artists and freelance work, as well as artist opportunities for virtual events. Furthermore, this award will allow the directors to continue to reach new writers, artists and readers throughout Scotland and beyond.

‘Since we launched the magazine’s Kickstarter we have been blown away by the support of Scotland’s writers and readers. We have been honoured to have some of the country’s biggest names—and some of its most exciting new authors—trust us with their work. Having secured the funding for the first two issues of Extra Teeth via public faith and generosity, we’re excited that this new funding allows us to take that positive energy onwards, and to contribute to the already thriving Scottish literature scene into the next year—and beyond. ’ – Heather Parry, Editorial Director

Extra Teeth began in spring 2019 and is based between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign in July 2019, which raised £10.8k, the first issue of the magazine was launched in November 2019. A collaboration between publicist and ex-bookseller Jules Danskin and writer and editor Heather Parry, the magazine showcases exciting, diverse contemporary writing coming out of Scotland and the wider literature scene. The concept of the magazine is rooted in bold words by both new and established contemporary writers, complemented and enhanced by original illustrations responding to the written pieces. Drawn together by sharp design and branding by Esther Clayton, each issue of Extra Teeth is very different in content and style, but linked by a quality and boldness of work, from writing and illustration to design.

So far, Issues One and Two have brought together short fiction and nonfiction by 24 writers both well-known and emerging. Published writers include Janice Galloway, Leila Aboulela, Kirsty Logan, Isha Karki, Nayrouz Qarmout and Martin MacInnes. Each magazine is guest-illustrated, with Issue One featuring the work of Maria Stoian and Issue Two with the work of David Lemm, both Edinburgh-based, who each brought their unique style and vision to their respective issues of Extra Teeth. The magazine is printed and sponsored by Allander Litho in Edinburgh.

‘What we have found in starting Extra Teeth is a community—from the writers and artists we work with to our stockists, readers and fellow small publishers. The magazine could not have been launched without the support of people who love contemporary writing, and it’s a testament to the strength and solidarity within the Scottish literary scene. With this assistance from Creative Scotland, we are excited to continue to grow and make it the best it can be.’

– Jules Danskin, Managing Director

New writing for forthcoming issues will be largely submission-based, with the Issue Three submissions period opening on September 1st and running for the whole month. During the previous submission period, over 500 short fiction and nonfiction pieces were received. A shortlist of illustrators for Issues Three and Four is currently being considered by the Extra Teeth team.
